Flagship Species

The Anjanaharibe-Sud massif occupies the southwestern part of the Andapa basin watershed. Anjanaharibe-Sud has a rich vertebrate fauna, including many endemic species with restricted geographical distribution. One of these is the silky sifaka, which is one of the world’s rarest and most critically endangered primates. The park is also the northernmost refuge for the Indri indri. The majority of the natural habitat in Anjanaharibe-Sud is composed of dense evergreen mid-altitude rainforest.

Economic value

The reserve ensures the role of hydrological source,feeding the basins of the region, and of protection of the hydrographic networks irrigating the large surface of rice cultivation of the basin of Andapa. It also plays an important role in regulating the region's climate.

Initiatives of the populations

As with all MNP-managed protected areas, management of the Marojejy - Anjanaharibe South Management Unit (MU) is collaborative, with local community members participating in conservation and development activities. They are grouped into CLPs (local park committees) and COSAPs (Protected Area Steering and Support Committees).

FAPBM contribution

FAPBM support for the Marojejy - Anjanaharibe Sud management unit is provided through the Sinking Fund, mainly covering salary costs and some operating costs.
