Flagship Species

Half of the protected area is covered by forests, in two main adjacent massifs and several satellite fragments; the rest is composed of herbaceous vegetation. The flora found here includes typical and widespread elements of the evergreen humid dense forest and two locally endemic species are recorded. The protected area also has significant biological richness in terms of fauna; a lemur species currently classified as endangered is locally endemic there (Lepilemur wrightae).

Economic value

The reserve is home to the rivers that provide water for the surrounding area.

Initiatives of the populations

Like all protected areas managed by MNP, the management of the Kalambatritra Special Reserve is based on collaborative co-management with the participation of members of local communities in conservation and development activities. They are grouped in CLP (Local Park Committee) and COSAP (Committee for the Orientation and Support of Protected Areas).

FAPBM contribution

FAPBM's support for the Kalambatritra Special Reserve began in 2023. For protected areas managed by MNP, FAPBM ensures the security of payroll and some operating expenses.
