« To get informed and to inform about biodiversity is the first step towards its protection »
Madagascar is home to several endemic species that are unique in the world, among them lemurs, which are one of the country’s emblematic and endemic heritage. According to the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), nearly a third or 31% of all lemur species are now critically endangered. The lack of information and knowledge about these species is a real challenge for their protection. Aware of this threat of extinction and the realities faced by these symbolic primates of the big island, Madagascar Lemurs Portal was created.
From 2016 to 2020, the project was unded by the JRS Foundation and implemented by a consortium made up of GERP, WCS Madagascar, and FAPBM, which is in charge of coordinating and financial management of the project.
In 2018, Madagascar Lemurs Portal was officially launched as platform for sharing information on lemurs through technology. This knowledge portal is built on a solid scientific basis with a vision to strengthen the conservation of the country’s iconic primates through better information sharing.
The site is available to the public free of charge at : www.lemursportal.org.
Its “Online Forum”, “Species Databases” and “Cartographic Visualisation” components allow exchanges among members and with national as well as international experts. It contains downloadable documents, observations and descriptive sheets on lemur species in Madagascar. To make it more accessible, the portal off-line version has been developed. The mobile application is designed both for users without access to an Internet connection and for researchers, tourists in the field and those living in the neighborhood of protected areas.
The ultimate goal of the project is to become the essential information tool for lemur conservation management, as well as the sustainable conservation of Madagascar’s biodiversity.
